Poetry Reflection

Poetry is important to me in special ways. Poetry is important to me because it is my escape. When there is something wrong or something bad happened, I go to poetry sometimes to help me through everything. For example, when my mom and dad split up, when I was in third grade, I used to write poems. The poems were not always sad, they used to be happy too! I would write poems to help me. I also remember the time of when I was struggling to stay in a happy, stress free place, I would write poems and it actually made me feel better. I think poetry is a great way to relieve stress and to help you get back on your feet.

Poetry is not for everyone. Some people might not like writing poetry or even reading it. Poetry is only good for some people. I know that I like to rad and write poetry. I think it is a fun activity and it can help my day get better if I need that. For other people they might think negative when writing poetry. Their poems might depress them even more if they are already depressed. There are many different types of poetry and the aren’t all just happy and sad. There is also scary and romantic. To name a few more, funny and serious. Not all people enjoy writing at all. Some people write poetry natural and others struggle to write a nice poem. If you struggle to write poems because the words just don’t fit together, then poetry isn’t for you.

Some poets go through struggles in their own lives. Sometimes it affects the way they write poetry. If their was something tragic in your past, then maybe you write depressing poems. Or if something really nice happened in your life then you might write very happy poetry. It all depends on how your background is and how you handle it. For me, I write both happy and sad poetry. Sometimes I write about the wonderful memories I gave with my family. An example is the time I went to Tennessee with my parents and my sisters. But when I remember of all the bad memories I have had as well, I write sad poetry. It all depends on the poet and how they portray their background into their poetry.

Through the poetry unit, I learned a lot of different types of poetry. I also learned about how i really do like poetry. I enjoyed writing the different types of poetry like the “Where I’m from poetry” and the “Spine poetry”. I learned that poetry is all around me. There is poetry in books, language, and much more! I really like how we were able to channel our emotions through writing beautiful artwork. I am amazed by how poetry affects my life and the people around me. Now that the poetry unit is over, I will be writing more poetry. Poetry is an amazing piece of art.

The Wild Girls 3.06.14

Pages Read: 1- 45
Prompt: Describe the setting – when and where what you are reading takes place

The wild girls is a book about a girl who moved from Connecticut to California. She moved here right before school started. in a few weeks she will be going to a new school, with new people, in a new environment. Joan, the girl, was sent of to go explore the neighborhood for her mom. Joan decided to follow a trail into the woods. She followed the trail and kept going. When the trail ended she just kept walking on to the right into the trees. She came across an open area by a creek in the woods. Joan looked around and was frightened to see a girl her age standing in the shade telling her to leave.

Joan was surprised to see her and said "I was just-", then the mysterious girl interrupted her. The weird girl kept telling Joan to leave and that she was on private property. So Joan turned around and walked away. She tripped on a branch and fell, she started to bleed. The scary girl walked over to Joan and asked her if she was ok and if she needed help to clean up her cut. So while Joan was getting help, the teenage girl told her to call her Fox. Fox was not her real name, it was really Sarah. Joan and Sarah got along together quite well. They went to the creek and were catching baby fish called Newts. So Joan told Sarah to call her Newt. So they referred to each other as Newt and Fox.

The setting in this book so far, is in the woods in California. The imagery sounds beautiful and I can picture it in my head. There are flowers everywhere and logs on the ground. The creek is wide and it glistens in the sun. This is how I imagine it. I also imagine birds chirping and insects flying every not bothering anyone. This sounds like a great place to escape and be alone and free.
